THE SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION

Today’s reading is taken from the Book of Colossians which says:

“In Him you were also circumcised with THE CIRCUMCISION MADE WITHOUT HANDS, by PUTTING OFF the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in BAPTISM, in which you also were raised with Him through FAITH in the working of God who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made ALIVE TOGETHER WITH HIM, having FORGIVEN YOU all trespasses” (Colossians 2:11-13).

To be CIRCUMCISED by Jesus Christ is a great BLESSING beyond description. Sometimes when we read the Scriptures, we read it in a hurry and we don’t take our time re-read it in order to discover God’s great works of salvation for us in Jesus Christ our LORD.

The above scripture passage from the book of Ephesians is one of the most POWERFUL passages in God’s Word of Salvation. This Word is so real, and the moment you understand it, you will continuously praise to God for THE LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST revealed through His baptism and blood.

When we comprehend this scripture passage from the book of Ephesians very well, we cannot, but to pour heartfelt gratitude and thanks to God from the bottom our heart for “THE CIRCUMCISION OF JESUS CHRIST” through His BAPTISM by which He took away our sins upon Himself.

WHAT then is CIRCUMCISION in the first place? According to the Bible, CIRCUMCISION is the removal or the cutting away of the flesh of a man’s foreskin (Genesis 17:11). God first made this covenant with Abraham and told him that it is an “everlasting covenant,” and therefore any male child who was not circumcised “shall be cut off” from His people (Genesis 17:13-14).

Everybody knows the CIRCUMCISION of the flesh, whether be a man or woman. But the question is, “How Many Times Is CIRCUMCISION Done In A Man’s Lifetime?” This is an important question which will enable us to understand God’s PERFECT SALVATION in Jesus Christ.

We all know that a person is CIRCUMCISED once in his lifetime, and by understand this underlying principle of CIRCUMCISION, we will come to know that God has actually “CUT OFF” (washed away) our sins and “FORGIVEN” them once and for all.

Our reading from Ephesians tells us about the nature of our CIRCUMCISION, by whom, how it is done, and the outcome of it. Therefore it says, “In Him you were also circumcised with THE CIRCUMCISION MADE WITHOUT HANDS, by PUTTING OFF the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ”.

When it says that we are circumcised with “THE CIRCUMCISION MADE WITHOUT HANDS,” it means it is a SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCSION. Now let’s find out who performs this CIRCUMCISION and the outcome of it.

It says, “by PUTTING OFF the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ.” This passage explains what exactly is the SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION, and it says that it is a type of CIRCUMCISION whereby Jesus Christ Himself CIRCUMCISED you by “PUTTING OFF the body of the sins” of your flesh.

It is also very important for us to know that the SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION takes place in our hearts, and it is God Himself who said this. He said, “Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your hearts” (Jeremiah 4:4).

So we see here in Jeremiah God Himself defining the SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION as the removal of foreskins from our hearts. When God says, “And take away the foreskins of your hearts,” He is talking about the 12 kinds of sins which Jesus says is in the heart of every man (Mark 7:21-23).

So how did Jesus “CUT OFF” all the sins from our hearts? In other words, how did Jesus removed the sin from our hearts. Here we are not talking about the judgement of our sins, and we are not talking about our justification. Therefore the blood doesn’t come in here, and the resurrection doesn’t come here.

The answer is therefore THE BAPTISM OF JESUS. You cannot say that we are CIRCUMCISED by the blood of Jesus. This is because His blood was for the judgment of our sins. And you cannot say that we are CIRCUMCISED by His resurrection because His resurrection was for our justification (Romans 4:25).

It is an ultimate truth that we are CIRCUMCISED by the BAPTISM of Jesus Christ. This is because our sins were transferred onto Him when John the Baptist laid His hands on His head to immerse Him in the waters of the Jordan River.

The passage in Ephesians also says, “buried with Him in BAPTISM, in which you also were raised with Him through FAITH in the working of God who raised Him from the dead.” It means that everything Jesus did for us was revealed in Jesus’ BAPTISM. The transfer of our sins, His death, and His resurrection were all revealed in His BAPTISM.

If John the Baptist who baptized Jesus testified, “Behold! The Lamb of God who TAKES AWAY the sin of the world” (John 1:29), and God also says “take away the foreskins of your hearts” (Jeremiah 4:4), then we must know that the BAPTISM of Jesus is the SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION which takes away he foreskins of our heart.

The Apostle Paul confirmed this SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION when he said, “For he is not a Jew who is one OUTWARDLY in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one INWARDLY; and CIRCUMCISION is that of the HEART, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God” (Romans 2:28-29).

When he says “OUTWARDLY in the flesh,” he is talking about PHYSICAL CIRCUMCISION, and when he says, “INWARDLY,” he is referring to the SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION which takes place in the heart.

And Just as the physical circumcision is done once in a person’s life time, Jesus Christ also circumcised us once and for all with “THE CIRCUMCISION MADE WITHOUT HANDS.”

Don’t forget that God said that if you are not CIRCUMCISED, you shall be “CUT OFF from his people” (meaning you cannot enter the Kingdom of God). Therefore if you are an “UNCIRCUMCISED” Christian, then it is very dangerous because it makes you a citizen of hell.

If you believe in only the BLOOD of Jesus, you cannot be SPIRITUALLY CIRCUMCISED unless you believe in HIS BAPTISM. Believe in His BAPTISM and you shall be CIRCUMCISED, and you will become righteous.

The purpose of the “the CIRCUMCISION of Christ” is to make you a RIGHTEOUS person. That is why when He was BAPTIZED, He fulfilled “all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15).

Those who have been circumcised with the “CIRCUMCISION MADE WITHOUT HANDS” are truly BLESSED!
