PUTTING ON CHRIST

Our reading this day is taken from Galatians which reads:

“For you are all SONS OF GOD through FAITH in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST have PUT ON CHRIST. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all ONE IN CHRIST JESUS” (Galatians 3:26-28).

THANKS be to God for His wondrous salvation in Christ. PRAISE be to His name for enabling us to escape from the snare of the devil through the gospel of truth which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And GLORY be to His name for giving us His Word of Knowledge from the Holy Scriptures.

To become a SON OF GOD or a CHILD OF GOD is an exceedingly great blessing which cannot be uttered with words. It is something which the angels of Heaven even “...desire to look into” (1 Peter 1:12).

In our reading from Galatians, it says that “For you are all SONS OF GOD through FAITH in Christ Jesus.” The words “SONS OF GOD” refers to those who have been born of God, and Jesus tells us HOW these “SONS” were born. He said, “...unless one is born of WATER and the SPIRIT...”(John 3:5).

It means we become “SONS OF GOD” by being born again of the WATER and the SPIRIT of Jesus Christ. The WATER here refers to the BAPTISM of Jesus. That’s why the Apostle Paul is saying in our reading from Galatians that, “For as many of you as were BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST have PUT ON CHRIST.”

Te be “BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST” is not talking about our own baptism, but rather, it is referring to our FAITH in the BAPTISM of Jesus Christ. And in order for us to know that it is not our own baptism, we will look at some event in Acts of the Apostles which clarify this.

When Peter was preaching and telling the people HOW they can received the gift of the Holy Spirit, he told them, “Repent, and let every one of you be BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 3:38).

When you read this, you may be tempted to think that Peter was talking about the BAPTISM OF BELIEVERS, and that Peter was saying that when a person is baptized, he or she will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. But this is NEVER true.

When Peter went to the house of Cornelius, something happened which shows clearly that OUR OWN BAPTISM is not the qualification to receive the Holy Spirit. The Scripture says, “While Peter was still speaking these words, the HOLY SPIRIT fell upon all those who heard the Word” (Acts 10:44).

In this incidence, the gift of the Holy Spirit was given to the Gentiles even though they were NOT BAPTIZED. That’s why in verse 47 of the same chapter of Acts, Peter said, “Can anyone forbid WATER, that these should not be BAPTIZED who have received the HOLY SPIRIT just as we have?” (Acts 10:47).

This proves that OUR OWN BAPTISM is not the qualification to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, but it is our FAITH in JESUS BAPTISM.

Therefore when Peter says, “Repent, and let every one of you be BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins,” he is talking about believing that JESUS took all their SINS away through HIS BAPTISM.

When Jesus Christ was BAPTIZED, He fulfilled “all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). Peter was therefore telling the people that unless they believe in JESUS BAPTISM, they cannot receive the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT. That’s why in his book he said that JESUS BAPTISM is an antitype of salvation which saved us (1 Peter 3:21).

Jesus told us emphatically that unless we are born again of the WATER and the SPIRIT we cannot enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:5). If this WATER is referring to OUR OWN BAPTISM, then WHY is that the thief on the Cross WAS NOT BAPTIZED, but Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43)?

If the WATER is our own baptism, then JESUS has broken His own rule of allowing somebody who was not baptized to enter the KINGDOM OF GOD. It proves that it is not our own baptism which saved us, but it is THE BAPTISM OF JESUS which saved us and qualified us to enter the glorious KINGDOM OF GOD..

Therefore when the Apostle Paul also says that, “For as many of you as were BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST have PUT ON CHRIST,” he is saying that whoever believes that JESUS bore all his sins through HIS BAPTISM have died with Christ, and he has resurrected with Him, and He is wearing JESUS CHRIST as his own body.

That’s why in Romans he said, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST JESUS were baptized into His death?” (Romans 6:3). What Paul is saying here is that, when you BELIEVE that Jesus took away all your sins when He was baptized, then His death becomes your death.

Jesus didn’t commit any sin, and therefore the “wages of sin” which is “death” (Romans 6:23) could not be apply to Him until He accepted our sins upon Himself. That is why God sent John the Baptist to baptized Him by laying all the sins of the world on Him.

You can never “PUT ON CHRIST” if you don’t believe in JESUS BAPTISM. When you believe in JESUS BAPTISM, you will be able to “PUT ON CHRIST.” And when you “PUT ON CHRIST,” you become a righteous person, a new creature and a child of God.

God has ONLY one SON. When His Son was BAPTIZED to fulfill all righteousness, He said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Therefore unless you “PUT ON” the SON (Jesus Christ) by believing in His BAPTISM, you cannot become a child of God.

When you “PUT ON” Jesus, you will understand why Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

Also when you “PUT ON” Jesus, you will understand why Paul said, “For we are members of His (Jesus) body, of His flesh, and of His bones” (Ephesians 5:30).

Those who “PUT ON CHRIST” by believing in His BAPTISM in addition to His BLOOD and RESURRECTION are BLESSED.
