JESUS SAYS “HE WHO OVERCOMES...” (Part 1)

Today our Scripture reading will be taken from some verses in Revelation chapter 2 and 3. Through these verses which were addressed to the seven (7) churches in Asia Minor, JESUS tells us the BLESSINGS awaiting those who “OVERCOME.”

In our two previous studies, we learnt in detail how we can “OVERCOME” the world through our “FAITH” in JESUS CHRIST “who came by WATER and BLOOD” (1 John 5:4-6). But here in Revelation, JESUS spoke about what He has prepared for those who “OVERCOME” through their “FAITH.”

The LORD spoke about the need for His Church to “OVERCOME,” which was not by their own might, strength, or power, but rather through their “FAITH” in Him. So let us look at how JESUS addressed the seven (7) Churches one by one to “OVERCOME.”

1. To the Church of EPHESUS Jesus said, “...To him who OVERCOMES I will give to eat from THE TREE OF LIFE, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God” (Revelation 2:7b).

We must not forget that in the Garden of Eden, the Scripture says that, “The TREE OF LIFE was also in the midst of the garden” (Genesis 2:9). However, Adam and Eve did not eat from this “TREE,” but they ate “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” and they died (Genesis 2:17).

However, by the kindness and the goodness of the LORD JESUS, He has given us a second chance to eat from “THE TREE OF LIFE,” and He promised to give to those who “OVERCOME” through their “FAITH” in His BAPTISM and CRUCIFIXION. He said that this “TREE” is “in the midst of the Paradise of God,” and He will give it to the OVERCOMERS to eat so that they can live forever (Genesis 3:22b).

2. To the Church of SMYRNA Jesus said, “He who OVERCOMES shall not be hurt by the second death” (Revelation 2:11b).

In Revelation 21:8, the Scripture tells us that “the lake which burns with fire and brimstone” is the “second death.” It is never the will of JESUS or His intention for anyone to perish in this fire (2 Peter 3:9).

The LORD told us in Matthew that hell is an everlasting fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41b). That’s why He is admonishing us to “OVERCOME” by holding onto our “FAITH” in the WATER, the BLOOD, and the SPIRIT which is the only way of escape.

Therefore God tells us in Revelation, “Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years” (Revelation 20:6).

If we “OVERCOME” by standing for the truth and defending our “FAITH” strongly in the WATER BAPTISM and the BLOOD of CHRIST, the “second death” will have “no power” over us because we will inherit the LORD’S body which is immortal.

3. To the Church of PERGAMOS Jesus said, “To him who OVERCOMES, I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it” (Revelation 2:17b).

When JESUS speaks about “the hidden manna,” He is referring to “The elaborate Word of God.” And when Jesus talks about “white stone,” he is not referring to a physical white stone. We don’t have to read the Scriptures with fleshly mentality. The LORD spoke figuratively.

In Daniel, the Lord even used beasts, horns, gold, iron, silver etc to represent empires, kings, world leaders, and other things. And as we all know, a white stone is very clear and bright so that when something is written on it, you can see the writings clearly and vividly.

Therefore when JESUS says that if we “OVERCOME,” He will give us “a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it,” it means that through our clear “FAITH,” JESUS will let us know that our names are written in THE BOOK OF LIFE, and that we have become the children of the Most High God.

Also if He says that “no one knows except him who receives it,” it is the same as when He said, “...And I know My sheep, and am known by My own” (John 3:14b). Therefore only the BORN AGAIN SAINTS know the mystery of salvation. Thats why the LORD said, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it has not been given” (Matthew 13:11).

But SINNERS on the other hand, do not even know how to become righteous in order to receive the “white stone.” That’s why we are supposed to preach and teach them the way of God more accurately.

We are told in the same book of Revelation that, “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). This is why it is indispensable for you and me to “OVERCOME” through our “FAITH” in CHRIST’S BAPTISM and His BLOOD in order to receive the “white stone” which JESUS promised.

4. To the Church of THYATIRA Jesus said, “And he who OVERCOMES, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations – ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces lie the potters vessels – as I also have received from My Father” (Revelation 2:26-27).

Let us pay attention to what JESUS says here very well. He said, “And he who OVERCOMES, and keeps My works until the end.” When JESUS says “My works,” he is referring to the works of salvation which He accomplished through His BIRTH, BAPTISM, BLOOD, and His RESURRECTION (the BBBR).

When the LORD says he who “keeps My works until the end,” He is talking about those who BELIEVE in His RIGHTEOUS works until the end. That’s why when the Jews asked Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” JESUS answered them, “This is the works of God, that you BELIEVE in Him whom He sent” (John 6:28-29).

We must not also forget what the LORD told us when He said, “But he who endures to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 24:13). It means those who stand firm in their “FAITH” in the righteous deeds of CHRIST to the end will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.

The LORD also promised that those who “OVERCOME,” He will give them “power over the nations.” This means He will reign with the Saints who “OVERCOME” with an exceedingly great power. That’s why it is written that, “If we endure, we shall also reign with Him, if we deny Him, He also will deny us” (2 Timothy 2:12).

We don’t have to “deny” the LORD by losing our “FAITH” in His WATER and the BLOOD. If we do that He will also “deny” us. So let us “OVERCOME” in order to enjoy the splendor of Heaven.

Our study will be continued for the remaining three Churches....

If you are HEARING these things, and you KNOW these things, and you BELIEVE in these things, then you are greatly BLESSED!
