Are you so sure you cannot fall from grace? Think again!

Take heed and beware of covetousness.

Luke 12:13-21. Warns us to beware of all forms of greed. Jesus did not come to this earth to tell us how to divide up an inheritance to see who should get the biggest portion. No, Jesus came to this earth to save mankind, spiritually. As a believer in the gospel of the water and the Spirit, do you have any sin? No! Is there any condemnation for you? No! What then is the biggest problem for us when it comes to leading our lives of faith?

God has saved us from the sins of the world for once and for all. Through the baptism He received from John the Baptist, God bore all our sins, and by being condemned and shedding His Blood on the Cross, He has saved us from all sins and condemnation. We have been saved by believing in the righteousness of God. To put this into simpler terms which no one can misunderstand, because God has already saved us, we have at least earned the passing mark. Assuming the passing mark is 60, this means that we have made this mark and passed the test. We have been accepted as Gods people.

This is where the problem starts after we have become born again. Our mark should go up from 60, but we tend to loose points because we allow covetousness into our hearts and there are too many things in this world that incite our greed. There are many temptations that stir up greed in our hearts, but Godís word says that we must reject such covetousness. We should enjoy the basic things our Lord gives us after we become born again, but it is wrong for us to become greedy over things which are too worldly.

When it comes to living out our faith, our worst enemy is greed. Problems we have in our faith after becoming born again 9 times out of 10 itís all because of our covetousness. When it comes to the necessary things God has given us, we can take them all by believing in the gospel of the water and the Spirit, we can take the remission of sin as ours. The problem starts when we try to take something which is not ours, that is, coveting something else other than what God has given us as our portion. We all know what covetousness means? For men and women alike, it is covetousness over the opposite sex, wealth, or fame that causes oneís life of faith to go astray. This is the biggest problem that everyone faces after being born again.

Those who have received the remission of sins from God are blessed both in body and in spirit. This is our portion as Godís people. If we say the perfect score is 100 and when we passed the test and became saved, our passing mark was 60. The remaining score which we have to earn is 40, so if we devote our hearts to God and gain even 1 more point our score would grow to 61. As we continue our life of faith in the gospel of the water and the Spirit that 61 should continue to grow. Here at least our faith is okay, however we must strive to achieve that higher score.

If we allow covetousness to enter our hearts, then instead of improving our score we would end up going backwards, to 59 and so on down the line, this would mean we were failing in the growth of our faith. Our hearts are gravitating towards the things of this world. We will end up being more interested in the things of this world than in the blessings of salvation which the Lord has given us. If we continue to covet these worldly things our score will only farther be reduced. If we allow this to continue then this will happen in spite of the fact that what God has given us as our portion, is more than sufficient for us.

When we want to take what God has permitted us to have, we must take it by faith without hesitation. But if our hearts turn greedy, and we try to take by force what is not ours aside from what God has permitted us, then our score will have dropped down another point to 58. If we donít take heed of this covetousness, and we continue to let this slip by thinking that covetousness is no longer a sin, be assured your score will only retreat farther, and before you know it your score will have dropped farther from 58 to 57, 56, 55, 54, eventually down to 50. At this point we have lost our basic score of faith, and the covetousness that we have allowed to enter our hearts will prevent us from leading our lives of faith properly. If we continue to neglect this sin of covetousness and our faith score continues to regress, soon we will only be believing with our heads that we think we have received the remission of sins, while in our hearts we are not really grateful for the remission of sins nor can we truly appreciate it.

Colossians 3:5. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: Fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil, desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Godís word tells us that covetousness is idolatry, and it is the greatest sin of all. The gravest sin for those who are leading a life of faith is greed. If you are greedy, your life of faith cannot succeed.

Covetousness is a sin. However it is so easy for us to think in our minds that this is no big deal, since Jesus took away all my sins. But this is not a minor issue. Godís word warns us to take heed and beware of covetousness.

1 Peter 4:3. For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.

It is because of covetousness that people fall into sin. It is also because of this sin of covetousness that we the born again can stumble in our faith. This is why covetousness is one of the gravest sins. Anyone who is having a hard time living out their faith because of their circumstances, then you must realize that it is because of your greed. If our brothers and sisters, who have all received the same remission of sins, are struggling in any way to lead their lives of faith properly, and nothing they do is going well, then itís all because they have allowed covetousness to enter their hearts. It is greed that makes us yearn for things other than the portion which God has given us.

My fellow believers, my brothers and sisters, although we the truly born again servants of Godís gospel of the water and the Spirit know that covetousness is sin, sometimes even we tend to think that this sin is not such a grave sin. However, for the truly born again, covetousness is the greatest sin of all the sins of the world. We all must grasp this truth.

Do not be deceived. If your life of faith is not growing as it should then itís because of covetousness. Do not misunderstand the issue here. We have become sinless because our Lord took upon Himself all the sins of the world. The point being, as we have received the remission of sins and been cleansed, we must not allow ourselves to become tainted by sin again because of greed.

We the born again must never end up tolerating covetousness by thinking it is never sin. Those who think this way have allowed themselves to become deceived, but tolerating covetousness is a huge problem in Godís sight. If we do not take this sin seriously enough, our faith can suffer, and as a result even our faith can be ruined by this greed.

Not taking this sin of greed seriously enough is a huge problem. Jesus told us that covetousness is the greatest sin. It is the sin of idolatry that offends His Word. And it is this sin of idolatry which can cause a born again to fall from grace.

Exodus 20:3. You shall have no other gods before Me.

The blessings we receive as our portion from our faith in Godís righteousness are more than sufficient for us to allow our faith to grow, and reach full marks. You can try cheating to gain full marks, but this is like entering the fold via the back door.

Taken from Rev. Paul C. Jongís book No 47, sermon 7. Discern the will of the Lord in your life.

God has blessed us all with His righteousness. Lets make sure we don't fall from His grace.
