HONEY IN THE CARCASS OF THE LION (LAW)

Our study for today will be based on Judges 14:8 which reads, ďAnd after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lionĒ.

However, I will want us to start the study by discussing Judges 14:5-6 before considering our main verse above.

Judges 14:5-6 reads, Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him. 6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

From our reading, Samsonís parents were escorting him to marry a lady called Timnath from Philistine (the uncircumcised tribe) after they had disagreed with Samsonís decision which was against the laws in Israel.

On their way a young lion roared against Samson. Isnít it mysterious for three people walking together and a lion roar against one of them but not all? This tells us that there is a mystery hidden in this circumstance.

When we look at this roaring lion, it revealing the mysteries of Godís saving power. The young lion that roar at Samson was a parable which represents Laws of God. The Law is so strong to liken it to the strength of a young lion which is difficult to conquer. So the Law warred against Samson when he tried to do something contrary to what has been the practice in Israel for centuries.

Looking at the Law given to the Israelites, their men or women were not allowed to marry across tribes. This was to avoid pollution of the Israelites from cross culture traits. Due to this, Samsonís parents stood by the Law strongly against him marrying from uncircumcised tribe Judges 14:3.

Let us even relate this into our personal lives, imaging your parents reject the man or woman you have chosen to marry. How would you feel? This was the same posture Samson faced and the bible described the magnitude of the pressure as matching the strength of a young lion very energetic.

Samson decision point out that he has rejected the laws of his forefathers and was trailing the path of unbelievers based on the canal knowledge of his parents. But they did not know that it was of the will of the LORD that Samson sought an occasion against the Philistines Judges 14:4.

However, Samson conquered the young lion (the Law) as he would have conquered a kid, without nothing in his hand. This revealed the total liberty that God has given us by putting us right with Himself without we adding any effort. Samson was not haven anything in his hands to face the lion (Law) but he conquered it by the power of God. So Christians who think they can br saved by their own efforts obeying the Law have neglected the savings power of God and are destined to die in the Law.

However, our flesh war all the time against the spirit and has become a barrier to our salvation. According to the Law of Moses, Samson has caused an abomination to think of marrying a gentile. There was a great opposition to this idea. Therefore, if we follow the Law there is no way we can meet the righteousness of God.

Samson could not have face the Law to marry Timnath, but the power of God was so strong for him that without his human efforts he overcame the Law. His marriage with Timnath was just a sign to demonstrate how God has planned to save the unjust through the just. It was a symbol reflecting the re-union of God and His lost children. The statement posed to Samson by his parents asking why he was living all the cleansed women of Israel to marry from an uncircumcised tribe clearly define the union that is being resurrected between the just and the unjust 1 Peter 3:18.

This marriage was what the Apostles described in Acts 15:3 that when they (Apostles) passed through Phenice and Samaria (regions of the gentiles), and preaching the gospel of the Water and the Spirit, the Gentiles were converted, and it caused great joy unto all the brethren.

And also Act 14:27 talks about how God opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles through His just son Jesus Christ.

Therefore, Samson marrying Timnath was to declare the uncircumcised as children of God. Or it is a sign pointing that God was re-uniting with the gentiles. By doing this the Law needed to conquer. But as strong as a young lion God parted away Samson and rent the lion Himself Judges 14:6.

So Apostle Paul told the Corinthians in 15:57 that thanks be to God for given us victory through Jesus Christ. He also repeated this scripture to the Ephesians in 2:8 and said we are saved by grace through faith; and not of our own efforts: it is the gift of God.

That was why Judges 14:6 said ďand he has nothing in his handĒ. This means Samson did not exercise any effort of his flesh but he was victorious by the power of God. He could not tell his parents about this because he did not do it himself so that he could boast of it. Eph. 2:9

However, there is sweetness and joy for those who conquer the lion with Godís power. This sweetness and joy was expressed in Judges 14:8 which reads And after a time he (Samson) returned to take her (Timnath), and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and HONEY IN THE CARCASS OF THE LION.

My brothers and sisters, this is how the mystery in Judges 14:8 about honey in the carcass of the lion unveiled;-

Biblically, honey stands for eternal joy and happiness Ex. 3:8. So the honey found in the carcass of the lion symbolized the eternal joy and happiness that Samson attained when he depended on the saving power of the Lord.

This also tells us that there is no joy or happiness for those living under the Law. But when God tear the Law into pieces, Samson and his parents saw eternal joy and happiness. That is, they ate the honey from the carcass of the lion. In other words, they were set free from the bondage of the Law and were enjoying freedom without limit.

Glory be to God that this mystery of eternal joy and happiness has been unveiled to us. Our freedom in life started when the Law was parted away in our life. We were slaves to the Law, but from the day that God exercise His saving power through Jesus Christ, we have been set free forever.

When the Law was put to death in our lives by the saving power of God through Jesus Christ, we are at liberty to walk freely without any condemnation. So the neglect of the Law to believe in Jesus brought us eternal life. The like figure of which is the death of the young lion which brought honey (eternal joy and happiness) to Samson and his family.

Samson did not rely on his strength but on Godís saving power to attain eternal joy and happiness. Christians must also imitate this by denying their flesh and heed to the Water Baptism, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ which set us free from the Law and gave us eternal peace, joy and happiness.

Also, when we read 1 Samuel 14:27, the bible said Jonathan ate honey and his eyes were enlightened. So for sinners to be enlightened or their sins forgiven, they must eat the honey in the carcass of the lion. That is, sinners must live a new life unguided by Law as Paul told the Corinthians in 1 Cor 5:7-8 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

But to this day, itís so pity that many Christians do not believe that they are saved. They are like Samsonís parents who ate the honey without knowing its source. Judges 14:9 reads, and he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.

If Samson had told his parents that the honey was from the carcass of the lion, they would not have eaten it. They would have carnally condemned the honey that the Law is against feeding on dead animals that died with blood in them. But the honey Samson gave to his parents was the word of God so that they will speak words of wisdom to family of Timnath and not to look down on them as uncircumcised people. So we will simply say Samson coached his parents on how to speak well (sweet like honey) to the family of Tamnath.

This is not different from Christians of today. They are coached use the name of Jesus but do not know what the name can do. They claim to believe in Jesus but do not believe that He (Jesus) has saved them by doing away with the Law to bring out honey (eternal joy and happiness) that the Law was preventing the children of God to eat.

But lack of knowledge of this mystery about what God has done for us, the bible says Godís people perish.

In practice, honey can only be harvested when the honey comb tree is cut down. Hence Christians can enjoy the sweetness (righteousness) in life, if they cut the Law away and harvest a non-condemnable life in Jesus Christ.

So it is incumbent on every Christian to accept that life is complete when one lives according to the righteousness of Jesus Christ. This will mean that you are living a happier life by neglecting the Law. The Law condemns, so if it is parted away, there is no condemnation anymore and life will be honey (happier and joyful) for those who believes in Jesus as Samson enjoy the honey in the carcass of the lion. Amen.
