CLIMBING TO THE HEIGHT OF GOD’S HOLINESS

Our reading is taken from the book of Luke 19:1-4.

Luke 19:1-4. And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
From our study text, Zacchaeus could not press through the crowd to see Jesus because of his height. Height here means sin. Therefore follow with a Spiritual mind as the above scripture help us to understand this topic “CLIMBING TO THE HEIGHT OF GOD’S HOLINESS”

The fall of Adam brought his relationship with God to a halt. This separated him from the image of God in which he (man) was created. He fell from the height of Holiness of God to the dark world of death.

However, God did not allow Adam to remain in this state of darkness, but killed a ram to purify Adam. This sacrifice was made to wash the spirit of man (Adam) that has been corrupted. God did not do anything about the flesh of Adam which was also infested by the nutrients of the fruit of good and bad knowledge. This is because the brain of Adam has developed some senses that make him desire for flesh satisfaction.

If God had wanted to take the bad senses from Adam, the way(s) may have been; to kill Adam and recreate him again; Or to prepare some concoction for Adam to take and shit or vomit the fruit poison. But the Omniscient God forgo these and raised Adam from the tunnel of death to the Height of His Holiness by the ram sacrifice. Note that, Sacrifices are made onto spirits not onto flesh. This means God was only interested in the Spirit of Adam not the flesh.

Therefore anybody born by man from the day of Adam’s fallen has inherited these bad instincts (senses) and need to be raised to the Height of God’s Holiness through sacrifice. For this reason God initiated the Sacrifice System of Climbing to the Height of His Holiness in the book of Leviticus (with emphasis on Chapter 16:21 which states “And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness”).

This sacrifice was first performed by God in Genesis 3:21on the sins of Adam and has to continue in regular sequence from generation onto generation. However, the practice of regular killing of animals was not the true sacrifice but rather the image of the true one to come. But not to contrast, God instructed the regular animal sacrifices so that His children will not forget the processes of Atonement while patiently waiting for the promised one. Finally God gave up His son Jesus Christ to come for the fulfillment of the true shadow of the Law (Hebrew 10:1-12).

Jesus in fulfilling the true image of what was foretold did not omit any aspect stated in the Law (Lev. 16:21);- starting from the presentation of an unblemished animal (The virgin Birth of Jesus), laying of hands (The Baptism of Jesus) and the killing of the animal (The Death of Jesus). I will call this process B-B-D (that is, virgin Birth, Baptism and Death of Jesus Christ). His resurrection is a proof of victory over death and justifies that whoever climb to His (Jesus) height will not die but live forever (John 3:16).

After the final Sacrifice of Jesus, anyone who wants to be forgiven of his sins is inclined to follow the B-B-D. We can only follow this by climbing up above our physical efforts as Zacchaeus did to name and shame his accusers.

Zacchaeus knew of his weaknesses as a thief, cheat, stingy, bully, corrupt, and many more. He saw these as hindrances to his salvation and confessed his flesh to death but rather run to Jesus to save his soul. By climbing the tree is signifies moving beyond the limit of his flesh. The tree stands for Jesus Christ. In John 15:5 Jesus said “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing”.

So Zacchaeus placed all his hope and entire burden on Jesus as his saviour and rested from public chastisement according to the Law. Jesus had to defend Zacchaeus before the public because he (Zacchaeus) has climbed on Him (Jesus) and push away his blames to rest (Luke 19:12-27).

In fleshly living, if you are being chased by something and you run on foot, the thing chases to catch up on you. But in the process, if you climb a tree, the thing must push the tree down or climb up to get you. So when Zacchaeus was being chased by his sins, he run to Jesus for safety. That was why the Pharisees (the readers of the Law) had to chase up on Jesus on why He accepted Zacchaeus. They were trying to push down the unmovable and unshakeable tree (Jesus Christ).

If Zacchaeus had relied on his efforts to see Christ, his height was a disadvantage in the crowd. The height here means his sins. Even people he lived with, did not accept him, how much more Jesus who was passing by? But he did not allow his height to discourage him. He placed his hope on the Messiah and brought his entire burden to Him (Jesus) as written in Matt 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Let us be mindful of our heights (sins) and run as fast as Zacchaeus to climb onto Jesus else we regret the day of our birth as Jesus said about the one who will betray Him. Matt 26:24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. This verse Matt 26:24 is not in referenced to Judas as many preachers say, but is referring to those who don’t believe in the (B-B-D) virgin Birth, Baptism and Death of Jesus Christ. It is the unbelievers of the B-B-D that betrayed Jesus not Judas.

Remember, the flesh profit nothing, so if you rely on this unprofitable statue, before you will come back to your senses on search for a place in heaven, God will tell you (Luke 11:7b) trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

Brother, Sister, climb onto Jesus to remove the trouble of the sins of your flesh that are on your head chasing you to death. Don’t be a hypocrite like the Pharisees, standing in your own height and thinking you will by all means get to the Height of Holiness one day. What I mean by standing in your own height is referring to the unbiblical adaptation of practical Christianity. Have you not heard or read Eph 2:8-9 that “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast”. Your practices including prayers, fasting, evangelism, care, kindness, love for one another, punctuality at church services, payment of tithe, giving, dressing, differentiating between clean and unclean foods, observing days, walking with your head down like sheep not to see men or women to avoid fornication or adultery and the likes cannot make you righteous. That is not the criteria to CLIMBING TO THE HEIGHT OF GOD’S HOLINESS.

The only criterion is that Jesus has taken all your sins (past, present and future) through His Virgin Birth (the blameless animal), Baptism (laying of hands to transfer all the sins of Israel to the animal) and Death (killing the animal to pay for the sins) (B-B-D). This is the criteria and His resurrection justified us as children of God.

Les us go beyond the flesh and climb up the tree (Jesus) in the Spirit to escape the entanglements of the flesh as Zacchaeus did. This is the only way we can CLIMBING TO THE HEIGHT OF GOD’S HOLINESS.

Thank You and God Bless You With Spiritual Understanding. AMEN
