Sermons on Genesis (V) - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ABEL’S FAITH AND CAIN’S FAITHRev. Paul C. Jong
My review of Sermon 15 \"Noah, a Faithful Servant of God\" of book 52 (The Difference between Abel’s Faith and Cain’s Faith)
By reading this sermon from the book I can see that Noah was truly a faithful servant of God who believed in and preached the Word of salvation to the people of his generation. The water that saved Noah\`s family of eight is the antitype of the Jesus\`s baptism in the New Testament (1 Peter 3:20-21).
Countless descendants of Abel have risen since his brother who was of the evil one murdered him. It is written that Enoch walked with God. It means that he followed the will of God closely and diligently. Though he did not live long like the people of his days, he however fulfilled his task as God\`s servant and was taken away by Him.
Noah was also a spiritual descendant of Abel, he walked with God. Like Abel, Noah heard the Word of God and offered the right sacrifice of faith to God. By carefully reading this book we can to see what God found problematic with Cain-like offering of faith and how Abel-like offering of faith has pleased God.
Noah believed in God\`s Word with his heart, he was a man who feared God. When we read this account of Noah in this sermon we can see how great Noah\`s faith is. Everyone in this world also need to have the same faith as Noah. In this age, the world has become so corrupt like the days of Noah. Even so, God is still keeping this world because He has seen our desires and effort to preach the gospel of the baptism of Jesus Christ and His bloodshed on the Cross all over the world. If we stop preaching the gospel of the water and the Spirit and abandon our faith in it, there will be no more hope for the people of this world and God will be left with no other option than to destroy this world. Therefore, we must continue to preach this gospel until the will of God is completed. God is telling us to walk with Him and to be faithful to this task like Noah till the end.
This Noah had the faith that overcame the world, this is the same faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came in the flesh with His water, the blood and the Spirit (1 John 5:5-8). Noah built the ark for one hundred years amidst persecution and slandering of the people of the world. People of the world must have ridiculed him, saying that he must be crazy. They might have wondered why Noah would take one hundred years building ark when there was no sign whatsoever that a great rain would fall enough to cover the earth with water and destroy everything. However, because God had told him that He would destroy his world, Noah believed in the Word and built the ark according to the Word of God.
The ark that Noah built refers to the gospel of the water and the Spirit that everyone in this should run into for a refuge. Noah covered the ark inside and outside with pitch. Because the ark was built with wood, there must have been gaps in the ark through which water can get in and cause the ark to sink, so God told Noah to cover it inside and outside with pitch. Through this, God is telling us to receive perfect remission of our sins. We must receive the remission of the sins we commit with our hearts as well as the ones we commit with our deeds, only then can salvation be perfect. We must build this kind of ark before God, we must receive the remission of our sins inside and outside by believing that Jesus Christ the King of kings became a man and was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River to take upon the sins of our hearts, thoughts and the sins we commit outwardly with our acts and bore the judgement by dying on the Cross, rose again from the dead after three days. This is the gospel of the water and the Spirit that Bible teaches us clearly.
God has also told us that He will destroy this present world with fire. We must be saved by believing in the water of the baptism of Jesus Christ and His bloodshed on the Cross. Through the believers in the gospel of the water and the Spirit God has built His church in the world. For us to come inside the true church of God, we must have the faith of the water and the blood. it is said that Noah\`s ark had no helm, it means that it was God Himself who was the captain of the ark. God sailed the ark until it landed safely and was saved through water. Like this, Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith and the head of His church. He will lead us to His Kingdom. He guides and protects us, He has even forbidden Satan the Devil from touching our souls. He can never lose those who are born of God to Satan, unless we ourselves choose to leave Him.
How great was Noah\`s faith? As I read this book, I can see how great the faith of Noah is. Noah believed in the Word of God as it is. For the fact that Noah spent one hundred years building the ark is evidence that he was a man of great faith. Moreover, Noah did all that God commanded him concerning the ark and all the living things with him, Genesis 7:5 said, \"And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him.\" Noah followed the Word of God as it is while denying his own thoughts. As I read this sermon I also read the account of this in the book of Genesis. There are many questionable things concerning this ark, from the ark not having helm, having one window at the top deck, having no provision for Noah himself to lock it, having three decks, having seven pairs of clean animals and only two pairs of unclean animals and so much more. However, all these puzzles can be solved by just believing in the Word of God. For instance since the unclean animals are physically strong they can survive and multiply even with two pairs on board, clean animals on other hands are weak and need to be many so that they would survive. This also means that even though carnal things do indeed come into our hearts once in a while, we must however allow more spiritual things to come into our hearts than carnal things.
Even when God told Noah to enter into the ark, he obeyed and entered the ark with his family of eight. Before he entered the ark, all the animals were still outside the ark, Noah did not tell God \"Since these animals cannot enter by themselves, God Let me first guide the animals to enter the ark before going into the ark.\" Since all the animals and birds that exist today had their pairs that entered the ark of Noah, how large must this be? All the clean animals entered the ark seven each of them male and female and unclean animals two each of them male and female, how large could this be not including the birds and everything that creeps on the earth? It must have taken Noah a very long time to guide the animals inside by himself. How about guiding the stubborn donkey inside? The rain might also come upon them and destroy all of them if he was to guide them inside by himself. This means that not following even one jot of God\`s Word can be this disastrous. Noah obeyed God and entered the ark, and God caused all the animals and birds and everything that creeps on the earth to also go into the ark. Then God Himself shut the door. Like Noah we must throw away our wicked thoughts of the flesh and believe only in the Word of God with \"Yes. Amen.\" God is pleased when He sees our faith in His Word like this.
Just as Noah had faith, he experienced by himself how the Word of God was fulfilled exactly as God has spoken. So when he disembarked from the ark, the first thing he did was to offer sacrifice of faith to God. Noah had the same faith of Abel. We the believers in the gospel of the water and the Spirit have the same faith of Noah, we believe that God will destroy this world and give us the new Heaven and Earth. Our faith is the same as the faith of Noah, we must hold onto His Word that this world will be destroyed soon and fulfill our task of bringing people into the ark.
