If neither the heart that wills nor the labor of running can wash away our sins, where does salvation come from?
Romans chapters 7–9 show us Paul, who groans in the body of death; the person who hears the word that there is no condemnation; the child who calls out “Abba, Father” by the Spirit of adoption; and God, who called Jacob. These chapters reveal the answer in the mercy of chapter 9, verse 16.
When Jesus received baptism from John, He had all the sins of the world passed on to Him once and for all, and our lifelong sins were also among them. This salvation, in which He shed His blood and died on the Cross to receive that judgment in our place and rose again from death, is the gospel of the water and the Spirit. The person who believes in it receives the Holy Spirit and becomes a child of God. The basis for this is not our labor but the mercy of God, who has given life to sinners.
