Matthew chapters 13–20 convey the treasure of the kingdom of heaven and the faith that follows Jesus.

The man who found the treasure hidden in a field joyfully sold all that he had and bought that field, but the rich young man could not let go of his riches and went away sorrowful. What made their choices differ? Jesus gives eternal life, which cannot be obtained by human goodness or riches. Through the baptism He received from John, Jesus had all the sins of the world passed on to Him once and for all, and as the price of those sins He shed His blood on the Cross and died in our place, and He rose again from death. The remission of sins and the treasure of the kingdom of heaven are given to those who believe in this gospel of the water and the Spirit. Those who know the value of that treasure lay down their own righteousness and their lingering attachment to the world, and follow Jesus with joy.
