The latter half of the Book of Joshua records the borders of the land and the distribution of the inheritance more than the wars of conquest. But Joshua chapters 13 through 24 are not a mere record of land distribution. They are the Word in which God fulfills His promise, gives each tribe its inheritance, and calls them to serve God only within it.
This book explains Joshua chapters 13 through 24 from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit. Caleb’s request for Hebron as his inheritance, the tabernacle of meeting at Shiloh, the cities of refuge, the altar of witness by the Jordan, and Joshua’s last exhortation and the covenant at Shechem show the salvation and the spiritual inheritance given in Jesus Christ. Jesus took all our sins upon Himself with the baptism He received from John the Baptist, died shedding His blood on the Cross, and rose again to complete salvation.
Enjoy by faith the remission of sins, the true rest, and the spiritual inheritance God has given. Cast away your own righteousness and your idols, be united with the Church of God, and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Believe that all of God’s promises are surely fulfilled, and pass the gospel of the water and the Spirit on to the next generation.
